My Favorite Interior Design Books

As an interior designer, I’ve looked through a myriad of design books and always love finding beautiful spaces that inspire ideas for my own work. My interior design books are tried and true resources that I often go to for inspiration. Here are my favorites and a few new titles that I’ve recently added to my personal library:

The Way We Live: An Ultimate Treasury for Global Design Inspiration

I love the international inspirations and the way author Stafford Cliff groups the categories, like doorways from around the world, stunning staircases and beyond. The photography by Gilles De Chabaneix is artful and cool, making this book more about the images than the stories of the interiors.

A Wonderful Time: An Intimate Portrait of the Good Life

My blog readers know I’m a fan of photographer Slim Aarons, so it may not come as a surprise that I treasure this, probably most famous, book of his photographs. His photos capture chic people in chic places doing chic things, and what can be more inspiring than that? The book may be circa 1970’s, but so much of what he captures is timeless.

Traditional Now: Interiors by David Kleinberg

This new book features elegant, modern rooms with fantastic details and sophisticated palettes and is becoming a staple for S. B. Long Interiors, as the design sensablity is akin to my signature modern traditional style.

Andrew Martin Interior Design Review

This is always an inventive resource, as it contains an interesting collection of international interior design—from hotels to yachts to ski chalets—by the world’s most talented designers. (Read about my designs being included in the Andrew Martin Interior Design Review Volume 15 here.)

The Best of Elle Deco
Originally given to me by a friend as a gift, this book is a wonderful edited compilation of timeless spaces—organized in categories such as closets, fireplaces and so on—that I’ve referred to time and time again for more than 15 years. And of course, when I’m not referring to them, all of these books look sharp styled on my Gallery bookshelf !

About

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by design and the subtle impact of our surroundings. Some of my earliest influences still resonate – I think of the dark woods and textured lodens of my father’s shooting club, the smell of fresh paint on a new canvas, and the bold symmetry of the Philip Johnson Glass house just down the street. For me, it was a natural path to become an Interior Designer. I love what I do. I’ve created this Journal to share my thoughts, finds and design inspirations. I hope you enjoy it!
