Work in Progress: Las Vegas Spanish Mission Home

July 28, 2014 by Susan Bednar Long Leave a Comment

As some readers may remember, with a great team of professionals we’re revamping a Spanish Mission house in Las Vegas (which I first posted about in January). As the construction is almost completed, I thought I’d share more of our progress.

Inspiration for the interiors came largely from my client’s extensive travels and time living in Southern California. We wanted the home to blend modern elements with the classic unadorned details of traditional Spanish missions. One of the coolest design details, so far, are the inlaid tiles by Karen Patterson (of K.J. Patterson Ceramics) that are installed as flooring and in most bathrooms. Patterson, who’s based just outside L.A., is a true artisan and makes all of her tiles using traditional techniques from the Medieval period; pigment is mixed into the surface of the tiles, rather than painted on, so the colors will virtually never fade. The designs and neutral, dusty tones perfectly compliment the surrounding desert landscape.

I’m also loving the hand-scraped, wide-plank walnut floors and steel windows and doors that are installed in certain areas of the house. The contrast against the white walls is crisp, and dramatic—a nice counterpoint to the more ornate tile work.

Now we are revving up for my furniture and window treatment installation. Hunting for one-of-a-kind antiquates to fill the house has been one of the funnest aspects of this project!

Here are a few highlights of our progress:

Welcome!

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by design and the subtle impact of our surroundings. Some of my earliest influences still resonate – I think of the dark woods and textured lodens of my father’s shooting club, the smell of fresh paint on a new canvas, and the bold symmetry of the Philip Johnson Glass house just down the street. For me, it was a natural path to become an Interior Designer. I love what I do. I’ve created this Blog to share my thoughts, finds and design inspirations. I hope you enjoy it!

Some of my favorite places to design in a house ar Some of my favorite places to design in a house are hallways and small spaces. This large home’s interiors flow easily into each other with tones of blue and cream with carefully design transition spaces. This upper stair landing turns into the primary suite hallway. We chose antiques, wall finishes, lighting, fabric and window treatments to make each of these spaces inviting and compliment the major rooms. #sblformalroundhill
